Mom. Writer. Educator. Dog lover. Pretty much in that order. When I’m not spending time with friends and family, whipping up a pot of killer borscht, or playing fetch with my dog, I’m probably writing.
My three novels cover the twilight of the Romanovs, 1916-1922. They’re sprinkled with magic: advisors risen from the dead, seances, a Yupik-Appalachian shaman, an occasional talking animal, and a fallen faith healer whose presence lurks throughout—-all blending with the historical record in a way that will provide you with a seamless take on the way things might have been.
My journey began as a question: what if Rasputin walked out of his village of Pokrovskoye and ended up in the remotest of villages, at the edge of the Russian empire? It took me three novels to answer that question.
Not a fan of those long Russian names? Not to worry. All of my novels include a list of characters and foreign terms.
The Moth Orchid: “An atmospheric, enthralling look at the fall of the Romanovs, Moth Orchid is both a sweeping imperial epic and a heartbreakingly intimate glimpse of a family in decline.”
— Jessica Hatch
The Romanovs Wish You Health in the New Year: “…a satisfying and intimate look at a legendary and mysterious moment in history.”
— Stuart O’Nan
Half Caribou Man: “The conclusion—to which the author builds with exceptional finesse and considerable talent—opens the historical mysteries of the Romanov family’s whereabouts to an imaginative new interpretation.”
